"In today's society, parenting requires more and more time, yet parents often give less and less. IT TAKES MORE THAN LOVE is at video/print curriculum designed to help parents and communities support the positive development of their children. The goal of this series is to provide a grace oriented framework for an asset-building approach to parenting -- which has been proven to be of value in successful parenting. This asset-building model is guided by three assertions that grow out of Search Institute's extensive research.
1. Development for children and adolescents requires constant and consistent attention to boundary issues, structured time use, educational commitment, positive values, social competencies and related positive growth experiences. These are called developmental assets.
2. These assets are in short supply. Most youth in all communities lack some or many of these building blocks.
3. These assets are strongly related to the choices young people make. The more assets a young person experiences, the less likely he or she is to engage in high-risk behaviors and the more likely he or she is to engage in positive activities. 1 Carousels and commitment- Intentional parenting. This program begins by establishing- the need to change thinking about parenting from a problem- centered to an asset-building mindset. This first program then asserts that nothing can substitute for time and attention. Lego's and egos Value-centered parenting. This program aims at encouraging parents to instill a sense of worth and value in their children. Values are communicated by parents who model and help children practice value-based behavior. This show focuses on the feeding and strengthening of the child.
2 Blue jeans and boundaries Nurture-centered parenting. This program introduces boundaries as an extension of values. Boundaries are values-based and when rules and expectations are communicated in a family they need to be connected to underlying moral values. This show recognizes that the purpose of parenting is to prepare children for confident adulthood. Crayons and community Inclusive parenting. This program reminds the viewer that raising children is a very complex and intense task and that parents can't do it alone. Parents need a larger community to help in this task. Parents need support and love from other adults and so do children. IT TAKES MORE THAN LOVE can be used in virtually any group setting -- whether it is at the church or at home.
